Munich By Night

Brunnenhof inside the "Residenz"
The "Residenz" is the residence of Bavarian dukes and kings from the 14th to the 19 th century. It is the large building east to Odeonsplatz. It has several inner courtyards ("Hof"), one of them this Brunnenhof.
At the entrance of the Residenz in Residenzstrasse, you'll see the portal with 4 lions: You'll be lucky if you put your hand inside their mouth while walking by (only if you fingers are crossed).

The Residenz also hosts museums and theaters.
Feldherrenhalle
Located at Odeonsplatz, built in 1841-1844 after a Italian model. (King Ludwig I was an Italy admirer)
Infamous building at the southern end of Ludwigstrasse with a nice square around it. Hitler was arrested here in 1923 during his first trial of taking over the power in Germany by what he called "Marsch auf die Feldherrenhalle".
Olympic park
Built for the Olympics in 1972, this is a nice arrangement of parks, lakes and hills (latter ones are made of destructed houses in World War II). The Olympic stadion hosts the two main soccer clubs of Munich, "?FC Bayern Muenchen" and "?TSV 1860", called the "lions" (Yeahhh!!). Every Saturday afternoon, you can enjoy German soccer atmosphere. Soccer summer break May - mid August, sometimes friendly games.
The Olympic tower gives you an excellent view of the city and if the weather is clear, a view of the Alps, as if they were just in front of your glasses. There is a turning restaurant at the top of the tower (as the toilets are fixed you might not
find your table again after a long session). Good
view of the city and into the Olympic Stadion.
The largest place for concerts, bicycle races, wrestling or dog expositions is the "Olympiahalle", next to the Stadion and Tower. International rock bands play for free in Greek-style theater at a small lake (every Sunday afternoon, June-September). "Olympiaschwimmhalle"(=Olympic swimming pool).
Mittlerer Ring
4-lane city peripherical, here a picture taken from the Olympic tower to the East with the BMW headquarters.
Siegestor (Victory gate)
Seperates the Ludwig- from the Leopoldstrasse in Schwabing.
Was built in 1843-1852 in honour of the Bavarian army's success in the liberty wars 1814/15 after the
model of the Constantin arch in Rome.
Brunnen an der Universit?(Fountain at the University)
Fountain at the main entrance of Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Ludwigstrasse. Hangout popular with (guess !) students.
Munich Panorama
If you have a real good camera, you can zoom the Bavarian Alps near like this on a very special clear day.
The mountain at the very right on this picture is the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, about 100 km
away.
This picture must be view from the Hertie building at M?nchner Freiheit to the South, you see Odeonsplatz with the Feldherrenhalle, the Theatiner church (yellow) and Munich's landmark, the Frauenkirche (church with the two towers).
Castle Nymphenburg
Is the the largest castle in baroque style in Germany, built from 1664 to 1758. It was the summer residence for the Wittelsbacher aristocrat family.
Very nice park around it with little lakes, sculptures and waterfalls, extends towards the new botanical garden to the west.

Besides the castle tour, you find 3 museums inside:

1) Marstallmuseum: splendid coaches, slides, horsewagons and riding equipment.
2) Nymphenburger Porzellan-Sammlung (porcellain collection of the porcellain manufactury that was founded in 1748).
3) Museum Mensch und Natur: history of mankind and earth and the relation human to nature.
Alter Botanischer Garten (old botanical Garden)
Little park area inside the city, north of the main train station. Here you see the Neptun fountain.

Castle Schleissheim
Is located in Oberschleissheim, about 15 km from the City center and can be reached by public transport.
Beautiful baroque-style castle with an extended picture collection.
Fasching (Munich's carnival) at Viktualienmarkt
"Fasching" is Munich's carnival and is also called the "fifth season". Fasching parties start in January in various locations all over the city with a peak during the Fasching weekend (always 7 weeks before Eastern, 1999 dates : February 11th to 16th)
Highlight : The dance of the market women and big open-air party on Viktualienmarkt on the last
Fasching Tuesday (starts 10 a.m.). See the whole city get crazy and drunk.
Schloss Lustheim
Is located at the eastern end of the castle Schleissheim park, was built in the 17 th century and is famous for its extended porcellain collection.
Night view of the Oktoberfest
That's something you shouldn't (and can't) miss when you're in Munich the last two weeks in September located at "Theresienwiese" you can crash down on drinking beyond your limits, meeting folks from all over the world, and learn to sing "The Waltzing Mathilda". All beer tents close at 11 p.m., so make sure you start our trip early enough. About 30% of the year's beer-production of the big breweries in Munich are drunk during these two weeks. Remember that weekends are usually too busy, it is then very hard to get into a beertent, especially if you're in a group.
